The 281 ft Swing Bridge was built in 1876 and stands on the site of the original Old Tyne Bridge of 1270, and probably of the Roamn Pons Aelius.

Looking South across Embleton Bay, this Iconic ruined castle now run by English Heritage stands on a remote headland. The Earl of Lancaster started building in 1313 as a symbol of his opposition to King Edward II.

Linking Newcastle and Gateshead, the Tyne Bridge was opened in 1928, and at the time was the world’s longest single span bridge. The design was based on the ‘Hell Gate Bridge’ in New York.

Built in 1898, St Mary’s Lighthouse is on the tiny St. Mary’s Island just north of Whitely Bay. The small rocky tidal Island is linked to the mainland by a short concrete causeway which is submerged at periods of High tide.

Bamburgh Castle is an imposing Grade 1 listed building on the Northumberland Coast 45 metres above sea level is one of the largest inhabited castles in the country. It was home to the Kings of Northumbria.

This is a view from the harbour looking towards the Holy Island, with the impressive Lindisfarne Castle. The castle was originally built in 1550, around the time that Lindisfarne Priory went out of use. Stones from the Priory were used as building material.

the 1,500 ft pier opened in 1869. In 1875 a gale removed 300 ft, further damage by ships and demolition by the Department of the Environment has resulted in a current length of 681 ft.
The Cliff Lift links the pier to the town above was built in 1894 and remains the worlds oldest water-balnced cliff railway.

Dunstanburgh Castle stands at the Southern end of Embleton Bay close to the pretty fishing village of Craster. The site has been occupied since prehistoric times, and the principal remains date from the 14th Century. Turner painted here many times.
